THOUSANDS of pooches and their owners took part in this year’s Great North Dog Walk.

It’s thought that by the time the event, which takes place on the Leas in South Shields, ends today 24,000 pets will have crossed the finish line.

The borough’s new Deputy Mayor, Coun Richie Porthouse, was delighted to start the walk.

He said: “It’s a great honour to have been asked to start the Great North Dog Walk.

“I am delighted the weather has stayed so fine.”
