STAFF at a South Tyneside theatre are ready to call ‘action’ on their new film project for young people.
The project, being run by the Customs House in South Shields, now has a name after its leaders asked youngsters to come forward with ideas on what it should be called.
The initiative has been dubbed Custom Reels and is set to be launched later this month with a Film in a Day project.
The event, on Wednesday, August 20, runs at the Customs House, in Mill Dam, from 11am to 5pm.
It will give young film buffs the opportunity to develop their filmmaking skills, shoot a short movie and have it screened in the venue’s cinema.
The day will focus on creating films eligible for the Port of Tyne Reflect Awards, and participants will be encouraged to enter their finished work.
The port’s award scheme was launched in 2007 to encourage creativity and discover hidden talent.
The group is being led by the venue’s cultural development assistant, Daniel Clifford, and marketing, programming and events co-ordinator Sally Hoban.
Daniel said: “I took part in a young people’s film project when I was 16, and within two years, I had gained enough skills and confidence to be running South Tyneside Young Filmmakers at the Customs House.
“That group had a fantastic impact on those involved, with many members going on to study at university and into careers in education, youth work, performance and music.
“We’re hoping to have even more success this time round, and some fantastic films to show.”
The project will also see the launch of the Custom Reels cinema card, which will entitle people aged 13 to 19 to eight weeks of free special screenings and tickets to all other screenings for just £2.50.
