Rejoice! The summer is here - and we are definitely ready for some fun in the sun.

But that means you need to get a plan in place for how you're going to keep the little'uns entertained until September.

Load up the car, pack a picnic and slap on the sun cream (hopefully) to enjoy what the region has in store.

Family Archaeology Day at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens: Wednesday, July 27. Join in with a day of digging in the sand in search of treasure.

Messy Art sessions at Monkwearmouth Station Museum, Sunderland: Thursdays from July 28 until August 25. Sessions will run from 1.30pm until 3.30pm. Create your own arts and crafts - but don't worry about making a mess!

Combat and Craft - A living history weekend at Arbeia Roman Fort, South Shields: Saturday, July 30 (11am until 4pm) and Sunday, July 31 (1pm until 4pm). Come and learn with this free weekend out!

South Tyneside Festival - Kids' Fun-Fest at the Ampitheatre, South Shields: August 2, 4, 9 and 11. Join in with the fun and games down at the seafront!

Harton Quays Park Craft Market, South Shields: August 7. Attend the monthly market and try your hardest to pick up a bargain.

Teddy Bear's Picnic at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens: Wednesday, August 10 from 12pm until 2pm. Fairies and pirates are welcome here with a themed Teddy Bear's picnic. Grab your favourite furry friend and go along.

Active Sunderland Beach Festival at Roker and Seaburn beaches: Wednesday, August 10. Try your hand at a range of sports activities and tire the kids out too.

SMILE Concert at Mowbray Park: Saturday, August 13 from 12pm until 4pm. Take the whole family along for this day of fun and music outdoors. Donations are welcome, but entry is free.

Arbeia Festival 2016, South Shields: Saturday, August 20 (11am until 4pm) and Sunday, August 21 (1pm until 4pm). Head to the fort for a weekend of fun - and learn a little something too.
