AHOY, me hearties!
Buccaneers will be getting set in South Tyneside for an event billed as a Crafty Pirate Weekend.
Salty seadogs will not even have to hand over pieces of eight as admission is free at this weekend’s pirate special at Bede’s World, in Church Bank, Jarrow.
Swashbuckling demonstrations and classes in swordsmanship are just two of the attractions at this weekend’s family event between Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday.
Matt Storey, operations co-ordinator at Bede’s World, said: “This is the third time we have staged a pirate weekend and they always prove very popular.
“Apart from various craft stalls and storytelling sessions, there will be demonstrations by The Black Gate Combat Academy all weekend, while on Monday, the Society for Study of Swordmanship will reveal how men and women battled at sea in days gone by.
“People will also learn how pirates staged battles and how they used their cutlasses.
“We will also have coracle boats in water on our Anglo-Saxon farm.”
Meanwhile, the Moss Troopers group will tell tall tales about seadogs on the high seas.
Time & Tide Events is hosting the three-day pirate special at the Jarrow museum, which will include something for all ages, including mini-classes, live music, food and charity stalls, plus craft activities.
Most of the Bede’s World staff will dress up as pirates over the weekend, and visitors will be encouraged to do the same.
There will also be history lessons in pirates for all the family. Entry to the museum is free all weekend, but donations will be welcome.
