A FUNDRAISING night is set to raise the roof – and cash – for a South Tyneside community centre.

The event is being held at Brinkburn Community Association, in South Shields, on Saturday, September 20.

It is being organised by members of the Nearly Famous Performing Arts Group, which is based at the Harton Lane centre.

The 7pm event aims to raise funds to make repairs to the centre, which is also home to the South Tyneside Academy of Musical Performance, Sixth Sense MMA, the South Shields Volunteer Life Guards, and former Pride of South Tyneside Young Performers of the Year, The Waiters.

Chris Perry, founder of Nearly Famous, said: “The stage floor is the original wooden floor and is in desperate need of upgrading, so we can continue to use this space.

“Brinkburn Community Association, South Tyneside Academy of Musical Performance and The Nearly Famous Performing Arts Group have invested thousands of pounds in redeveloping the space, so that it can be used more often for theatre, events and live gigs.

“This refurbishment of the main school hall and the main CA entrance have brought a new lease of life to the venue, and we want people to know that Brinkburn is still around and very much still in use.

“We welcome more than 3,000 people through our doors each week to use the facilities, such as our theatre, swimming pool, soft play, boxing room, gym and rehearsal room.”

The fundraising night will include performances from Lumsdale Theatre Arts, Sunshine Singing Club and Young Performer of the Year nominees Eliza Smiles.

Tickets for the event cost £7 for adults, £5 for children and £22 for families.
