POP sensations One Direction today announced they will kick off the UK leg of their 2014 world tour in the North East.
Harry, Zayn, Liam, Louis and Niall will take to the stage at the Stadium of Light, the home of Sunderland AFC, on Wednesday, May 28, next year, as they embark on their first global stadium tour.
It is one of only four UK dates, and is a huge coup for Sunderland AFC, who have already played host to stars including Oasis, Take That, Pink and Bruce Springsteen, and are set to stage gigs this summer by Rihanna and Bon Jovi.
The other venues on the tour are Manchester City FC’s Etihad Stadium, Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Wembley Stadium in London.
1D, as they are popularly known, have sold more than 14 million singles and eight million albums, after emerging from TV talent show X Factor in 2010.
They have won two Brit Awards and three MTV Video Music Awards in their fledgling career.
Tickets for what is anticipated to be the biggest concert ever staged at the Stadium of Light will go on sale from 10am on Saturday, May 25.
They will only be available through official ticketing websites and phonelines (see below for full details). There will be no ticket sales from the Stadium of Light box office.
Sunderland AFC commercial director Gary Hutchinson said: “This is set to be the biggest concert the stadium has played host to.
“One Direction really are the band of the moment, with a massive international profile and fanbase, so to secure one of only four UK stadium gigs they will be performing is fantastic for the club, the city of Sunderland and the wider North-East region.
“Playing host to the opening night of the tour will also ensure a world-wide profile for the Stadium of Light, and further cements our credentials as one of the country’s top venues for major music shows.”
Coun Paul Watson, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “One Direction are one of the biggest bands in the world at the moment, so it’s fantastic they are choosing Sunderland as part of their first stadium tour.
“This year’s concerts are set to be the biggest and best yet, bringing thousands of people and millions of pounds into our economy.
“The fact that we’re already confirming acts for next year is proof of the fantastic work taking place behind the scenes to ensure Sunderland is always top of the list for major bands and artists on tour.”
