There was lots going on that year including the UEFA European Football Championships and the Olympics.
But closer to home, all this was happening including festivals and fairs.
Laygate School pupils were pictured in the strips of the teams competing at the Euros and children from Bedewell, Bede Burn, Valley View and Jarrow Cross were all involved in a debating competition.
The good news is we have photos of all those South Tyneside events and here they are.
Take a look and then get in touch to tell us more.
