A man who harassed a woman with “numerous phone calls” has been jailed.

Jonathon Armstrong, from South Shields, is beginning 12 weeks in prison after a court decided the “offence was aggravated by the defendant’s record of previous offending”.

Armstrong admitted pursuing a course conduct which amounted to harassment of his victim when he appeared before magistrates earlier this week.

He was jailed just two days after his 39th birthday and ordered to pay a £128 victim surcharge.

Armstrong, Sorrel Gardens, was also ordered by South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court to abide by the terms of a restraining order for the next two years.

This forbids him from contacting or attempting to contact his victim “by any means whatsoever, directly or indirectly”.

Nor must he encourage anyone else to contact her in a similar manner, enter a named South Shields street or either enter or stay in a property where he believes her to be present.
