Gary Lineker has hit out at Newcastle United over the club's handling of Steve McClaren's dismissal.

The relegation-threatened club today sacked the 54-year-old from his position as head coach.

Newcastle fans had chanted for McClaren to be sacked during last weekend's home defeat to Bournemouth.

United this week started talks with potential successor Rafa Benitez – and McClaren was kept in the dark about his future.

The former England coach had to start preparations for Monday night's game at Premier League leaders Leicester City knowing he would not be in the dugout at the King Power Stadium.

And Lineker said on Twitter: "Newcastle have finally put Steve McClaren out of his misery. The running of that great football club is beyond shambolic."
