Hebburn sweethearts celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary after they first met 64 years ago

David Newby, 82 and his wife Margaret, 80, from Marina View in Hebburn tied the knot on December 10, 1960 and have now celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
The couple met at the local dance hall in Hebburn back in 1956 when David walked Margaret home before becoming engaged for four years.

Hide AdSix decades on from their wedding day, the couple are celebrating the special occasion, with Margaret telling the Gazette the secret to their long and happy marriage.
She said: “I was just 20-years-old and David was 21 when we got married so it’s been a long time.
”We’ve had our ups and downs, everyone does but we have always been there for one another.
"The best thing that you can do is to just talk to each other and we’ve been lucky to have always had each other, it’s been a happy 60 years and I never imagined that we would get to this point on our wedding day.”

Hide AdThe couple have put their happiness down to having a strong family bond between themselves, their three children and six grandchildren however the couple also share another love.
Margaret added: “We’re both massive Sunderland fans, we each have season tickets and we never miss a game where possible.
"It’s just a bit of a shame that we aren’t doing so well at the moment but we look forward to going back.
"We have a really strong family bond with all our children and grandchildren

Hide AdWith the North East being in Tier 3 Covid-19 restrictions, the couple have had to cancel their original plans of celebrating but their family have been helping out to mark the special day.
“We were supposed to be going away but when the restrictions were announced, we unfortunately had to change our plans.
"Our family have been helping us to celebrate the day though, we’ve had an afternoon tea and the house has been decorated which is nice.
"We’ve had a great day, I’ve never been off the phone with everyone ringing to congratulate us.”
