Inside the South Shields terrace flat which has been transformed into an art gallery
Women’s House is a female artist-led project aims to provide a meaningful platform for debate about gender equality and status of women’s art.
The exhibition is the brainchild of two artists, Padma Rao and Miki Z, and saw them transform a Tyneside flat into an immersive creative space and gallery.

Hide AdAs well as collaborating on their work, they invited local women to make creative responses to feminist issues.
Padma Rao said: “Women’s House brings ‘personal into social and the social into political’ spheres using ‘feminism’ as the context for our conversations, introspections and both individual and collaborative interrogations.
“I am so pleased to have the opportunity to explore and reflect on issues that can often be brushed aside as cultural, historical or simply obligatory.”
Inspired by the iconic feminist installation ‘Womanhouse’ by Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro, Women's House is an exhibition exploring diverse women's identities and expressions is currently on display at Makaan Art Gallery, in Talbot Road, South Shields.

Hide AdMiki Z said: “This exhibition is an important starting point in that, it opens the discussion around intersectionality of women. The uncomfortable, unsaid things that we could only touch upon during the project. Equally, it created a space for dialogues between different women from diverse backgrounds.”
The exhibition is open to view until Friday, December 30 from 11am- 3pm by appointment.
