Tyne and Wear Metro said a broken-down train just outside of Fellgate Station, as it headed towards Pelaw, was the cause of the issues, which were reported earlier on Tuesday, October 27, before the service returned but with delays by 11.45am.
The breakdown meant trains were unable to run in either direction between Pelaw and Brockley Whins stations, with a Metro shuttle service run between Brockley Whins and South Hylton.

Hide AdA spokesperson said: "The service has now resumed between Brockley Whins and Fellgate.
"Trains are now running to all destinations but with severe delays in some areas.
"Metro apologise for the inconvenience.”
Passengers were also could use Go North East buses, which had accepted tickets and passes on their bus service 9, 26, 27 and 35.
The problems follow delays earlier on Tuesday across the network due to low rail adhesion, caused by leaves in the autumn months.
