Bruno Guimaraes' wordless reaction to controversial Man Utd incident as Newcastle United lose 3-2

Bruno Guimaraes issued a wordless response to Newcastle United’s denied penalty shout against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Magpies lost the match 3-2 but a big talking point after the match was Sofyan Amrabat’s challenge on Anthony Gordon in the first half. The Manchester United midfielder pulled Gordon and caught the Newcastle winger’s heel with his studs but nothing was given.

VAR also refrained from getting involved as Rob Jones’ on-field decision stood. After the match, Gordon hit out at VAR in an interview with Sky Sports.

“I have watched it back and it is a clear penalty,” he said. “I don't mind the referee getting it wrong on the pitch, but I don't understand the point of VAR. He [Amrabat] goes down my Achilles and pushes me in the back.

“I knew straight away, that is why I didn't appeal. I waited for the VAR to check, I told my teammates 'it was a clear penalty'. I don't understand the point of it, either get rid of it or get better - it's that simple.”

And Bruno Guimaraes took to X to share a still image of Amrabat’s studs connecting with Gordon’s Achilles as well as the player’s torn sock in the aftermath.

Instead of writing any comment on the incident, the Brazilian let emojis voice his feelings with the decision as he posted a peeking eye and zipped mouth emoji. The emojis convey a message of surprise and discomfort at the decision while refraining from making a comment that could land him in trouble.

Newcastle now head into the final match of the season sitting level on points with Manchester United and needing to at least equal their result in order to secure a top-seven finish. The Magpies travel to Brentford on the last day of the season while Man United face Brighton & Hove Albion.
