Steve Bruce has bitten back at Malcolm Macdonald’s over criticism of him at Newcastle United.

Bruce was asked if he had watched anyone like Allan Saint-Maximin growing up after the winger’s goal gave the team a 1-0 win over Southampton at the St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.

United’s head coach referenced former United striker Macdonald – who works in the media on Tyneside and has been critical of Bruce this season – in his reply after naming Jimmy Smith as a player that excited him as a young fan.

“’Jinky’ Jimmy Smith,” said Bruce, whose side is 13th in the Premier League with 35 points. “My hero was Supermac when I was a kid. But he works for the media in Newcastle and canes me every other week, so he can sod off!”

Newcastle take on Sheffield United at St James’s Park on Saturday.
