Wilson, Newcastle’s United's 10-goal leading scorer, suffered a "devastating” hamstring against Southampton earlier this month which could keep him out for up to eight weeks. The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time given the relegation-threatened club’s predicament near the foot of the Premier League.
"It’s a bad tear on his hamstring – it’s devastating news for all of us,” said head coach Steve Bruce.

Fans will hope that Wilson, signed from Bournemouth last summer, is slightly ahead of schedule given his importance to the 17th-placed club, which is just three points above the drop zone ahead of Saturday’s home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
