The Gazette reported last month that the club was exploring a January move for Willems, whose loan at St James’s Park last season was cut shot by a serious knee injury.
Willems – who is out of contract next summer – is now fully fit, though he has not played any competitive first-team football for parent club Eintracht Frankfurt so far this season.

Asked if Willems could rejoin Newcastle, Lens said: “Of course, there’s this possibility. Jetro got along very well in England (with Newcastle), and is willing to go back there. They (Eintracht) want to extend the contract. Either we extend the contract – or he leaves this winter.”
Willems hinted at a future return to United in an interview with the club in August.
Asked if he was open to one day returning to Newcastle to finish what he started, Willems said: “Of course, of course. It’s sad that it ended like that. I feel like I’m not done yet. We will see. It would be great to be back – and show them at St James’s.”

However, any January deal would have to be right for Newcastle – and the left-back.
