Sky Sports Soccer Saturday pundit Matt Le Tissier believes Newcastle United’s decision to re-sign Andy Carroll was a “PR stunt”.

The 31-year-old rejoined his boyhood club last summer, nine years after leaving the Magpies to join Liverpool for £35million – a British record fee at the time.

But since returning, Carroll has been prone to picking up little niggles, restricting him to just three Premier League starts in a total of 13 appearances.

He has missed United’s previous six matches due to a mystery hip injury. Steve Bruce last week discussed his contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Le Tissier hinted the timing of Carroll's return was questionable after fans voiced their anger towards Mike Ashley over the departure of Rafa Benitez and Bruce's arrival.

"It's a PR stunt, very much so,” the former Southampton forward said.

"It had been that long since he had been fit for a period of time. He has (got desire) but it's a shame for the lad.

"Nobody wants to be injured. As a professional footballer, it's the worst place to be where you are sat injured all the time.

“I had it the last few years of my career and it's just so frustrating. It must be heartbreaking for Andy Carroll.

"But you look at the signing and you do wonder how much thought went into it in terms of can we get him fit and playing regularly, week in, week out.

“Pretty much (to get fans onside)."
