Just one Premier League goal is all United have to show for their £40million outlay and while performances have improved, prior to football lockdown, goals continued to elude the Brazilian.
Here we take a look at the most expensive Premier League buys outside of the supposed ‘big six’ – and rank where Joelinton’s fee sits.
1. Gylfi Sigurdsson - £44.5m
The Icelandic attacking midfielder is the biggest transfer outside of the supposed 'big six' in the Premier League. Everton signed Sigurdsson from Swansea City in the summer of 2017 for a club record fee. Photo: PAUL ELLIS
2. Youri Tielemans - £40.5m
Belgium international Tielemans, a former Rafa Benitez target at Newcastle United, was signed last summer by Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers - and it's fair to say he's hit the ground running in the Premier League. The No.8 has six goals in 39 this season, forming an influential part of Rodgers' attack-minded Foxes, alongside former United man Ayoze Perez. Photo: OLI SCARFF
3. Joelinton - £40m
Newcastle United paid Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim £40million for the Brazilian last summer. He has scored one Premier League goal since then, as well as two in the FA Cup. Photo: Charlie Crowhurst
4. Sebastien Haller - £36m
The West Ham United frontman has been put in the same bracket as Newcastle's Joelinton but the facts do not reflect that. While the striker has not been a runaway success he has, in fact, scored more than double the amount of goals in a similar amount of games. Haller has seven in 30. Photo: Stephen Pond
