Last year, bosses behind the Sanddancer revealed plans to transform the Sea Road venue into a beach bar and restaurant as part of a major £130,000 investment.

The works marked the pub’s first refurbishment for around 11 years with the site now boasting new external signs.

Earlier this month, a planning application was submitted to South Tyneside Council to develop the site further by extending the outdoor area.

Proposals from applicant, Punch Taverns, list a raft of works at the venue by Sandhaven Beach.

This includes timber decking and paving, three timber beach huts and two pergolas, including one with a perspex roof.

Bosses say their design incorporates covered seating in areas that are exposed and more seating and space for groups to enjoy the sea views and summer sunsets.

If approved, the area would be enclosed by two metre high fence alongside refurbishment of existing garden and decking areas.

Owner and manager of the Sanddancer, Edd Hilton, confirmed the venue would remain open throughout the works.

“The Sanddancer was refurbished in March 2019 after I took over the business, the site was dull and needed investment and we took it back to its beach theme with a bright, warm contemporary look without losing the beautiful views,” he said.

“This year, we looked at how we can offer something different moving away from the marquee events once or twice a year to give the customers and the location something different that can be used all year round.

“Our design incorporates beach hut style seating booths, fire pit, gazebo coverings in areas exposed and more seating and space for groups to enjoy the sea views and late summer sunsets.

“We’re looking to incorporate an outside bar in existing storage sheds so you don’t need to walk far from your friends for a drink, coffee or cocktail.”
