The Can Can Bar on Ocean Road, which closed its doors earlier this year, has been given a new lease of life ready for its opening night under new ownership.

The bar was taken over in October by Michael Jeffels and Gillian Grainge, of Candescent Entertainment Ltd, who also own the popular Rose Inn in Wallsend, renowned for its live entertainment.

The Can Can Bar will be dedicated to live music, quality tribute acts and of course, regular karaoke nights.

Some of the UK’s top tribute acts, including Ed Sheeran, Pink, Lady Gaga and Robbie Williams impersonators, are already lined up for weekends throughout November.

There are also plans to put on family-friendly sessions on Sunday afternoons once a month, so youngsters can enjoy music from the likes of Ariana Grande.

Meanwhile they hope to introduce a food offering to the venue over the coming year.

Today’s opening night will see the US Diana Ross act Tameka Jackson take to the stage, with a free glass of champagne for the first 100 customers, drinks offers and VIP booths available to reserve free of charge.

“There doesn’t seem to be anything else like this in the area,” said manager Josh Marr.

“We’re the only one who is going to be offering this level of entertainment free of charge.”

He continued: “We’re aiming to keep the drinks reasonably priced and have something for everybody.

“Through the Rose Inn, we’ve built really good relationships with some of the UK’s number one acts.

“These kinds of acts would usually be on in theatres and at ticketed events, but we’re going to let everyone enjoy it for free.”

Josh added: “We also wanted to offer events for the whole family to get involved with and we hope to raise some money for charity, to give a little bit back to the community.”

The Can Can Bar is also recruiting locally and is looking for weekend bar staff and cleaners.
