Tributes after ‘gifted' science teacher for South Shields' Harton Academy dies at work

Alan Williams, who taught at Harton Academy in Lisle Road, South Shields, passed away on Thursday July 16.

Harton Academy headteacher Sir Ken Gibson said the popular teacher would be “a massive miss’”.

Sir Ken said: “It is with great sadness that we announce that our friend and colleague of 24 years, Mr Alan Williams, passed away peacefully yesterday at work.

“Alan was a gifted science teacher and an all-round decent and genuine man who always had the best interests of the students at heart.

“He will be a massive miss to everyone at Harton and we wish his partner Cathryn, and their family and friends, our deepest sympathy at this awful time.

“As a mark of respect and in light of this devastating news, I will leave any updates and information about September until a more appropriate time."

Tributes have been left to Mr Williams on the school’s Facebook page, with former pupils recounting their memories of the teacher.

Michael Taylor recalled school trips, saying: “He was a great teacher. He taught me at school and also took us on trips for Duke of Edinburgh. Sad to hear about his passing.”

Rebecca Longstaff remembered how he looked out for the pupils, adding: “He was an amazing teacher and always had our best interests at heart. Ten years since I’ve left Harton and still have amazing fond memories of him.”
