Big poll majority favours the new opt-out organ donation system

The NHS ‘Pass it on’ campaign has been launched with the aim of encouraging people to talk about organ donation.

From spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered to have agreed to donate their organs when they die, unless they opt out or are in an exempt group.

So we asked in our Facebook poll: “Do you think an opt-out system is the best way forward?” At the time of writing 350 people had voted, of which 83% said yes, 17% no.

Sandra Wanless said: ”I feel this is a much better way as it takes the decision away from grieving families who may struggle knowing what to do. I'm in.”

Shona-Lee Patterson thinks: “You should discuss all your wishes after you've passed away with your family and friends. I really don't understand why it’s such a taboo subject. Everybody dies and it should be up to ourselves to sort out and discuss our death plans.

Joanne Culyer said: “I’ve already registered and got may organ donation card. So simple, just go on website.”

Margaret Anderson said: “If you would accept a donation for yourself or family, you should be ready and willing to donate yourself. It’s very simple really.”

Suzanne Smith said: “I think organ donation should be compulsory not a choice. You don't need your organs when you die.”

Annelise Hamilton said: “I'm already on the register. So hopefully I will be recycled when my time comes.”
