Healthcare leaders at the trust are still urging members of the public not to come onto hospital sites unless it is “absolutely necessary” as the battle with coronavirus continues.
It was revealed in December that South Tyneside District Hospital and Sunderland Royal Hospital were caring for the same number of patients as at the height of the pandemic in April and are continuing to do so.

Figures also show that 172 patients have been admitted to hospital since Christmas Day up to January 3.
Dr Sean Fenwick, Director of Operations at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust said: “Given the rise in cases of COVID-19 in the community, we are continuing to enforce the further preventative measures which we put in place across our hospitals before Christmas.
“We want to try and reduce unnecessary footfall onto our hospital sites as much as possible from people who are potentially COVID-19 positive and unknowingly may risk spreading the virus.

"We need the public to support us now, more than ever. Please help us and don’t come onto our hospital sites unless absolutely necessary.”
According to the Press Association news agency, more than half of all major hospital trusts in England currently have more Covid-19 patients than at the peak of the first wave of the virus.
