Nine pictures from previous Great North Run finishes in South Shields - we'll miss these scenes this year

It’s almost here! And while the route may be different, the memories of the Great North Run will come flooding back for thousands of people.

The 40th staging of the Great North Run takes place this weekend with a revised course for runners to face.

But we have lots of memories of the day you ran from Newcastle to South Shields in the past.

We have reminders from the runs of 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2017 with everyone from fancy dress runners to keen joggers in the picture.

So as you get ready to face up to the 13 miles – or watch it all on telly – sit back and enjoy the memories.
