The Clifton in South Shields has long been a firm favourite with local people and tourists thanks to its unique offer, friendly atmosphere and typically warm welcome. The family-run venue provides stylish accommodation along with an enticing coffee shop famed for its delicious breakfasts and afternoon teas.
Now it has scooped the title of Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Business of the Year 2023 in the hotly-contested Best of South Tyneside Awards.
Scenic coastline
Run by husband and wife team Liz and Scott Carlucci, with the help of daughters Be and Sophie, The Clifton is situated on Ocean Road, just a short stroll from the scenic north east coastline
It has created local job opportunities and grown from a staff of just three to ten – including its first apprentice who joined the team more than eight years ago and happily stayed to hone his skills.
Liz and Scott, who both have teaching experience, have also run courses for young people at the start of their careers as well as offering training to businesses which are keen to extend workplace skills.
TV fame
The couple received their latest award earlier this month and said they were very proud to have a business in South Tyneside and to champion the area for everything it has to offer visitors. They thanked customers for their support and credited their dedicated team with The Clifton’s ongoing success.
Many people still remember Liz and Scott’s television appearance on the Channel 4 programme Four in a Bed back in 2015 soon after they started the business. The popular show sees B&B owners invite each other to stay as they compete to be crowned the best hosts. They secured a very respectable second place along with some excellent feedback.
En-suite rooms
Fast forward to now and The Clifton has developed significantly since then. The hotel boasts 17 en-suite rooms and accommodates guests from all over the world. It has consistently won the annual Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards and has recently invested in technology, fresh décor and flooring to enhance its overall offer for visitors old and new.
The attractive library room and lounge area provide a suitable setting for a range of gatherings including celebrations, anniversaries and wakes.
Dogs welcome
The hotel, which is open all year round, is dog friendly making it an ideal retreat for all the family. The Coffee shop is open from 8am every day, closing at 4pm Monday to Saturday and 2pm on Sundays.
Table reservations are recommended at peak times and hotel guests are advised to book directly to secure the best rates rather than through online agents.
