You can’t keep a good mining community down.
And if proof were needed, head just across our borough border this coming Sunday, to Wardley which will be holding what’s become an annual and popular colliery community gala.
The venue is the Wardley Club at Palmer’s Hall, Palmer’s Bank, Wardley, from 1pm, where the welcome speech will be given by Dave Hopper, general secretary of the Durham Miners’ Association.
The guest speaker will be Ian Lavery MP, former national president of the National Union of Mineworkers.
Thereafter, it’s a celebration of all things coal, with colliery banners to see, and also Silksworth miners’ mining memorabilia stall. There will also be books for sale, Irish dancing and music from Felling Silver Band, with folk music in the evening.
Food will be available all day, and admission is free. Children welcome.
