WHAT a starry soccer line-up this is, and I’m not just talking about the younger players.
It is also straight out of the sports history of one of Shields’s most fondly remembered schools.
This smashing picture has come to me from reader David Fuller, who is the lad fifth from the left in that back row.
At the time - the year is 1964 - he was goalkeeper with what was Cleadon Park School football team.
Three years later, in 1967, most of these lads went on to win the coveted Aitchison Cup.
Happily, David has also been able to furnish all the names, so in that back row are, left to right, Tommy Foster, Willy Robson, John Anderson, Willy Collier, David himself, Malcolm Butchard and Alan Palmer,
The teacher and coach was Norman Cardew, who played for South Shields AFC, which at the time played at Simonside Hall.
I believe Cardew had also earlier played for Darlington and in the late 1960s, he had the distinction of being the top scorer in the North Regional League.
Going back to the players, in the front row are Alan Halliday, Malcolm Knight (Captain), George Marshall, Melvin Carnal, and Terry Baines.
