Most people will be familiar with young people’s uniformed groups, such as the Scouts, the Guides and the Boys/Girls Brigade – but what about the Girls Venture Corps?
I have to admit that I know very little about the corps, but judging by our picture selection this week, it was a popular choice among girls throughout South Tyneside.
From the archives, I’ve unearthed a photo of the Whiteleas 1014 Unit and a South Shields detachment (taken in the 1960s and 70s). Perhaps you were one of them?
They and others are pictured on parade during a parents and friends evening, as well as being presented with trophies and certificates.
Were you a member of the Girls Venture Corps? What did you used to get up to during your time in uniform and what are your favourite memories of those times?
Please get in touch with your recollections.
As ever, we’d love to hear from you!
