The North East Combined Authority (NECA), which owns the Tyne Tunnels, has confirmed that the increase will apply to both car and heavy goods drivers.

And the news of the price rise has not gone down well with you on Facebook.

Karl Dinning said: "They get enough for how many people go through on a daily basis. Absolute robbery!! They know people work on the other side of the water from both sides and will have no option to pay."

And Joey Davison said: "Rip offs. And it's free to cross the tyne anywhere else."

The tolls will be £1.70 for cars and £3.30 for heavy goods vehicles, with permit holders continuing to get a 10 per cent discount on each journey.

Rachel Phillips commented: "Absolutley shocking, it's expensive enough as it is without adding on!!" while David Wheelhouse simply said: "Should be free," and Mark Young added: "Joke."

The running of the tunnels and the repayment of investment is paid for through toll monies and not through council tax.

But some of you on Facebook have asked why we are paying the cost already.

Ian Michael King asked: "Why not make it like Dartford? There are no toll booths and all payments are online, or in shops or by phone. That would cut the queues and save money on staff," and Kathleen Jayne Tudberry said, "Tunnels and bridges are part of the road system so the upkeep should be part of the road tax - we pay enough."

"Shocking news!" was the reaction of Barbara Farnan, and Nyree Fraser said: "I remember when it was 80p!!" while Peter Watt added: "It's about time tolls got scrapped. The English are getting a raw deal. Both Scotland and Wales have scrapped their toll charges."

There has been no change though to the charge for motorcyclists and services buses though, who will continue to use the tunnels toll-free.

Tracey Davis said: "I see its still free for motorcycles. There is your answer people."
