Stephen Price, headteacher at Westoe Crown Primary, called in Northumbria Police earlier this week in a bid to stop parents parking inconsiderately in ‘no stopping zones’ outside the school gates.

On Monday, officers identified eight drivers and four were spotted on Tuesday all will now receive fixed penalty notices.

A South Tyneside Council spokesman said: “We are committed to improving road safety, particularly for our vulnerable road users, such as school children, pedestrians and cyclists.

“Following some concerns about road safety at Westoe Crown Village, the council is introducing a 20mph zone across a number of streets including the area surrounding Westoe Crown Primary School.

“A No Entry restriction at the front of the shopping area is also being relocated closer to the school entrance, in response to a number of complaints and observations by traffic engineers of drivers not adhering to the existing restrictions.

“The scheme will not only help to make the area outside the school safer but help to improve access to the shops.”
