The Wearsider’s 46 off 18 balls included five fours and three sixes as Durham chased down the hosts’ 149-8 with five overs to spare.

Mustard said: “It’s always good to have a few records around the T20 stuff and I’ve really enjoyed it over the years. When we saw they had Guptill and Buttler we thought we might be chasing 180, but the young bowlers came back very hard from last week’s game against Worcestershire and they put up a very good show.

“One week in T20 you can get pongoed and then the next week you’re a hero, but it just shows the character we’ve got in the side.

“We had a chat and thought that the ball might swing and that would be how we would get Guptill out. We didn’t get Guptill out but we got everybody else out instead.

“I didn’t plan to get 23 off the first over, but it just seemed to come off and once he dragged the first one down, it gave us some confidence.

“He was under the cosh after the first ball and it was just a case of making inroads after that.

“Over the years we’ve had our struggles in the T20 but this year we’ve come out a very positive side and we’re happy to take a few risks and we have some powerful hitters up the order so we’re looking to keep that mentality.”
