A19 motorists face nearly a month of new diversions and delays
A stretch of the A19 on the outskirts of Sunderland will be closed overnight and the daytime speed limit reduced to 50 miles per hour while resurfacing takes place.
The work affects drivers heading north on a near two-and-a-half-mile stretch of the dual carriageway between the A690 Herrington interchange, near Doxford Park, and the A183 Chester Road turn off, near Hastings Hill.

Signposted diversions will be in place with entry and exit slip roads also closed to prevent motorists reaching the affected area while engineers work.
A Highways England spokeswoman said: “A 50 miles per hour speed restriction will be in place at all times when the road is open because of the temporary surface drivers will be using.
“This will remain in place during periods when the work is not taking place such as over the bank holiday period at the end of May.”

The cost of the scheme has still to be disclosed.
The Highways Agency spokeswoman, however, did confirm that average speed cameras would not be in place within the 50 miles per hour zones.
The work follows similar carriageway repairs last month to a nearby northbound stretch of the A19 between the A1231 Hylton Grange interchange and Boldon’s Testo’s roundabout.
