HE might have been a late arrival for his mum, but little Adam James Ayre made sure he was South Tyneside’s first baby of 2015.
The adorable little tot made his way into the world at 1.50am today at South Tyneside District Hospital, weighing 8lbs 13oz, much to his mum Ashley Gray’s relief.
The 24-year-old, from Hebburn, had been expecting her first-born to arrive on his due date of Christmas Eve – or even earlier.
Miss Gray, whose partner is Chris Ayre, 30, said: “He was due on Christmas Eve, but he decided he didn’t want to make an appearance then, he kept me waiting!
“The family were all convinced he’d come earlier though, even I was, but I guess we were all wrong.
“But I’m delighted that he’s the first baby of the year, it makes it that extra bit special doesn’t it?”
Miss Gray, a sales assistant, went into labour at 5.15am on New Year’s Eve and arrived at the hospital, in Harton Lane, South Shields, at 11.30am.
However, the new mum isn’t bothered that she missed out on the celebrations.
She said: “I’m just glad he’s here, it was a very, very long labour, I’m shattered.
“There were four of us in labour when I arrived in the morning, two of the mums gave birth before midnight and the other lady is still in labour.
“So Adam beat them all to being the first of 2015. Now I just can’t wait to take him home.”
