The companies enjoy close relationships with the marine school, which is part of South Tyneside College and carries out training on their behalf.

It runs specialist programmes that get new cadets ship-shape for well-paid and fulfilling lives on the ocean waves.

Marine school principal Gary Hindmarch said the event, from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, February 6, offers the best possible advice.

He added: “We are the UK’s oldest maritime training centre and enjoy expertise that is second to none.

“Our Shipping Day gives people contemplating a career with the Merchant Navy the information they need. They can speak to our own experts and those from the shipping companies to learn about this most exciting and challenging of careers.”

The marine school, which was established in 1861, is based within the college’s Westoe campus in South Shields, with entry on Grosvenor Road.
