Alan Shearer gives his promotion verdict on Newcastle '“ and reveals whether he will return to management

Shearer, the club's all-time record goalscorer, has given a wide-ranging interview to the Greek edition of FourFourTwo.

The Match of the Day pundit talks about Newcastle's Championship promotion hopes, the bond between the club and the city and the chances of him returning to management, having had a brief spell in charge at St James's Park in 2009.

Shearer also names the best two managers he worked with in his long and hugely-successful playing career.

On Newcastle's chances of promotion and the bond between the club and the city:

"Yes, I expect them to come up.

"With it being a one-club city, the support and backing is amazing. They have been starved of success for so long, I hope the wait doesn't go on too much longer. The people in Newcastle live for their football and their football club, and they worship anyone who gives their best for them."

On returning to management:

"No. I am very happy in what I am doing with my TV and media career."

On turning down Manchester United in 1996:

"I have no regrets. It's the best thing I ever did. I lived my dream, and not everyone can say that. When I signed for Newcastle, they had finished second the previous season.

"Success and trophies looked like they were around the corner, and I wanted to try and make it happen for my boyhood club. It didn’t, but I have no regrets about trying."

On the best moment of his career:

"The best moment of my career was being named England captain. I was lucky enough to do it for four years – 1996-2000."

On the best managers he worked with:

"Kenny Dalglish and Bobby Robson. Kenny helped me to develop as a striker, and we won the title together at Blackburn.

"Bobby was a huge part of me staying at Newcastle when he arrived at the club."
