The striker is wanted by Fulham, but the two clubs are yet to agree a fee for the 23-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Craven Cottage.

Newcastle are demanding at least £18million for the Serbia international.

Fulham have reportedly offered £16million for Mitrovic, who is not in Benitez’s plans at St James’s Park.

Mainz striker Muto has passed a medical and agreed personal terms with United.

However, the proposed £9million move won’t be finalised until next week.

A club statement read: “Newcastle United can confirm that Japan international Yoshinori Muto has been on Tyneside ahead of a proposed move to the club.

“An agreement has been formalised between the Magpies and Muto’s current club, FSV Mainz 05, and the player has undergone a medical and agreed personal terms.

“The transfer is now subject to the player being issued with a Governing Body Endorsement, which will be determined at a hearing to take place later next week.”

Muto faced Newcastle in pre-season last year.

The 26-year-old flew to Tyneside from Tokyo, having been given an extended break by his club following his involvement with Japan at this summer’s World Cup finals.

Meanwhile, United are understood to have signed teenager Rosaire Longelo.

The winger has reportedly signed a four-year deal at the club after passing a medical.

Longelo had come up through the ranks at West Ham United’s Academy.

Benitez is looking to add to the club’s development squad following a number of departures from the Academy this summer.
