A South Tyneside man’s annual contest is setting out to prove that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Unconventional beauties will be strutting their stuff on the catwalk this weekend in a bid to be named Alternative Model of the Year.
The competition was launched by Kieran Martin, from South Shields, in 2011 and now tours around six major cities in the UK to find the nation’s most outrageous styles and unique individuals.
Kieran, 23, said: “Alternative Model of the Year aims to question mainstream views on true beauty and break down the barriers in what is otherwise a competitive industry.
“Among this year’s finalists is just about every style you can imagine from goth, punk and pin-up to name a few, there is also an array of amazing tattooed individuals who have entered the contest to show off their ink.
“The contest promotes and celebrates diversity in the modelling industry.

“This year we have seen more contestants than ever before, we have hosted seven audition dates opening the doors to even more would-be models.”
The modelling hopefuls will be taking to the catwalk at the Northumbria University Students’ Union, in Newcastle, tomorrow.
The event is the biggest of its kind in the UK and attracts more than 300 participants each year, from as far away as Mexico.
This year’s winner will be offered a modelling agency contract and a photoshoot experience worth £1,000.
Tickets for the 6pm event cost from £20. To find out more and to book tickets, go to www.alternativemodelling.com
