Brewers Fayre asked for help in choosing the name of its newest eatery, which is set to open in the town later this year.

Whitbread, which owns Taybarns and Brewers Fayre, has chosen to replace the Taybarns, in Hobsons Way, with a restaurant from its other brand and asked Gazette readers to suggest a name.

They chose their three favourite suggestions, The Cinder Path, Dwelling Place, and The Arches, and we put them to a vote on our website yesterday.

321 votes were cast, and The Cinder Path came out as the winner with 52% of the vote.

The Arches was second with 38% and Dwelling Place third with 10% of the overall vote.

The all-you-can-eat Taybarns will be transformed into a Brewers Fayre and opened under its new name later this year.

The changes to the restaurant will take place this summer.

They could include the creation of a children’s play area, with most Brewers Fayre restaurants having one.

The Cinder Path, inspired by the novel by South Shields-born writer Dame Catherine Cookson, was suggested by Maria Patterson and Bill Nicol.

Zoe Tomsett, field brand manager at Brewers Fayre, said: “We’re very excited to open the new Brewers Fayre and wanted to give the community a chance to vote on the name. We’re absolutely delighted with the top choice The Cinder Path and look forward to introducing the new restaurant in November.”

All branches of Taybarns, which was founded in 2008, will be converted into Brewers Fayre.

It is understood that staff at each of the seven sites have been told of the impending change, with their jobs expected to be safe.
