Andros Townsend on why he's ready to fire England to glory after Newcastle heartache

Townsend was outstanding in the latter months of the relegated club’s campaign.

And he starred in Sunday’s season-ending 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, his former club.

The 24-year-old joined Newcastle in a £12million deal in January after spending more than two months in the cold at White Hart Lane.

And the winger’s form earned him a place in Roy Hodgson’s provisional squad for Euro 2016 after Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck was ruled out through injury.

Townsend, having hardly featured for Tottenham in the first half of the campaign, feels he is “fresh” ahead of Euro 2016, which is being staged in France.

Hodgson has until the end of the month to decide on his final 23-man selection.

“Roy knows what I can offer,” said Townsend.

“If he wants a player like me, he will include me. If not, I will have a good break and recharge for next season.

“I’m fresh. I have played 13 games this season.

“I’m gutted the club season has ended, because I’m just getting into my stride. Confidence is back and showing on the pitch, and I’m devastated the season is over.”

Townsend made 14 appearances, and scored four goals, for United after his move from Tottenham.

And the Londoner was “gutted” that improving Newcastle, unbeaten in their last six games, simply ran out of time.

“Anyone who has watched me for Newcastle saw it took me three or four games to get going, then the last five weeks I have been close to my best form,” he said.

“I’m getting back to my best, and I’m gutted we have to take a break for the club.

“But for my country, I have plenty to give. You’d have seen I was fresh (against Tottenham) and just loving running around.

“I’m in great shape. I can help England and the England manager if he wants to use me in France.

Townsend missed out on a place in the England squad for the World Cup finals in 2014 because of an injury.

And he is “desperate” to go to his first major tournament.

Asked what it would be like to go to Euro 2016 with England, he added: “It would be incredible.

“I missed out on the last World Cup because of injury.

“Obviously, I was down in the dumps, because it would have been a dream to go to Brazil.

“It was an awful feeling to miss out. It would make the Euros more special.

“As a player you want to be in the tournaments. I’m desperate to do well for my country as well as my club.

“I feel like on a personal level I’m only just warming up now the club season is over. I’m ready to go.”

Meanwhile, United pair Freddie Woodman and Adam Armstrong have been named in Aidy Boothroyd’s England Under-19 squad for two friendlies against Mexico next month ahead of the summer’s European Championships in Germany.
