Three months ago, with the help of Tedco Business Support and Virgin StartUp, she officially launched Green Shift Educational Service Ltd.

Mrs Harrison delivers interactive workshops and learning programmes through after-school clubs and children’s science parties.

She said: “Having worked as a teacher for more than a decade, I was very aware that as the youngsters approached the latter years of their school education, you could see that for many – and in particular for girls – the enthusiasm they once had for many of the science-based subjects just simply was not there any more.

“It sparked an idea that there had to be more that could be done outside the traditional classroom teaching to inspire students from a very early age, and help to continue their interest right throughout their education.”

As the business grows, it is hoped it will create job opportunities to meet demand as well as enable the company to expand into other parts of the country.

Mrs Harrison added: “We are experiencing a skills shortage in this country; STEM-based subjects offer a huge and diverse range of career opportunities after students leave school, but we need to do more to encourage a higher number of people to look at these options.

“This must start with sparking their interest at the earliest possible age and maintaining their enthusiasm at each stage of their education journey.

“Green Shift aims to make learning challenging but fun, with interactive, hands-on activities for everyone to enjoy.”
