Artist's call for '˜twinners' to help out ahead of his new South Tyneside exhibition

Last year Scottish artist and theatre maker Eric MacLennan launched his Invisible (L)ink project in South Shields.

The idea was to link a specific part of the town with the equivalent in another part of the world.

He said: “We concentrated on the route between the old Central Library and The Word. So a paving stone, post box or lamp-post along King Street or something else on the route would be twinned with a similar object elsewhere in the world.

“We asked local residents to twin their object in a place they had a connection with – either in the UK or further afield.”

One hundred and two objects were twinned in the project, and now Eric is asking ‘twinners’ to help him with an exhibition at The Word in Market Place, South Shields.

Eric explained: “I’ve asked them to contact their twin and ask them for a picture of them stood next to their object – and for a picture of them with their twin, if they have one.”

The pictures, together with audio recordings of the stories behind the choice of objects, will provide content for the exhibition at The Word, in South Shields Market Place, early next year.

The project is funded by Arts Council England as part of the Arts in Libraries project aimed at adding arts activity into libraries and is managed by South Tyneside Council in partnership with The Customs House.
