The cost of dying in South Tyneside is just over £3,700, new figures show.
Statistics compiled by insurance firm Royal London show that the average cost of being buried in the borough stands at £4,143 and £3,327 for a cremation.
The average cost of funerals for families in South Tyneside is £3,735 - with the average cost in the North East slightly lower at £3,679.
This year’s survey also reveals that the average UK funeral cost is £3,784.
For a second year, Kensal Green in London is the most expensive location in the UK for a funeral, costing on average £6,516.
The research also found lower cost funeral options such as direct cremations continue to be popular.
Of all the cremation funerals held, 10% did not include a service.
However, those who choose to have a ceremony or service saw an increase in costs, with the amount spent on discretionary funeral items such as catering and venue hire rising.
The combined spending on venue and catering is at an average of £840.
A South Tyneside Council spokeswoman said: “We appreciate that the loss of a loved one is an extremely difficult time for families and the cost of arranging a funeral can make it even more distressing.
“We regularly review the level of our cemetery and crematorium fees and charges which cover the operational cost of the Bereavement Service.
“The local authority cost for carrying out a burial or cremation is just one part of the overall funeral director’s bill, which often includes fees for things like doctor’s certificates, ministers and flowers.”
