Their opponents on the other hand, have had a tough time of late, with the Monday night loss to Swansea their fourth consecutive defeat in the league.

Perez, however, remains cautious, focusing on the Magpies defeat to Quique Sanchez Flores’ team in the FA Cup two weeks ago as evidence of how tricky the Hornets will be.

Perez, who scored the opener against the Hammers, said: “Against Watford, it’s going to be a hard game, a tough game at their stadium.

“We went there a couple of weeks ago, and we know them.

“Now we must work to improve and try to get the points.”

Costel Pantilimon, the Romanian goalkeeper who left Sunderland for Watford this week, will challenge for the No 1 spot.

The Hornets, could also hand a debut to Moroccan international Nordin Amrabat, who joined the club from Spanish side Malaga in a £6million deal.

A win for Newcastle would close the gap between the two teams to just five points.

Watford also beat Newcastle in the league earlier this season, winning 2-1 at St James’s Park.
