Beyoncé in Sunderland: Metro bosses announce extra trains for Stadium of Light concert

The sell-out concert on Tuesday June 28 is going to attract a large crowd and Metro is one of the key modes of travel to and from the centre of Sunderland.

DB Regio Tyne and Wear, which operates the Metro on behalf of Nexus, recommends anyone heading to the concert on Metro should allow plenty of time to make the journey. Extra Metro services will be running between Newcastle and Sunderland to get people home after the concert.

A special event Metro ticket is available to buy in advance from any Metro station ticket machine or Nexus TravelShop Buy in advance to avoid queuing for a Metro ticket on the day. It costs £4.80 and is valid for all day and all zone travel. It can found under ‘other tickets’ on the Metro ticket machines’ touch screen menu.

Paul Walker, Customer Service Director of DB Regio Tyne and Wear, said: “Anyone planning to travel by Metro to see Beyoncé at the Stadium of Light should travel as early as they possibly can and buy a ticket in advance.

“Concerts at the Stadium of Light are some of our busiest nights of the year. Extra Metros will be running, but my message to customers is to leave plenty of time in order to make their journeys to the venue.

“The special event Metro ticket will help customers to save time and avoid queueing at the ticket machines. It costs £4.80 and is valid for all day and all zone travel. It can also be used on the Shields ferry and on Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland.”

Additional trains are being laid on to cope with the increased customer demand, both before and after the concert.

Metro staff will be on hand to help customers at St Peter’s Metro station and Stadium of Light Metro station, which are both a short walk from the venue. Central Station, which is currently undergoing a modernisation scheme, will remain open during the evening on Tuesday 28 June.

When the concert is finished there will be long queues for Metro trains at the nearby stations but the extra services will mean these will be cleared as quickly as possible. Extra staff will be on duty to provide crowd control and customer services.
