Householders are being urged to take their bins in after a spate of arson attacks on South Tyneside.

South Shields fire station tackled three bin fires inn the Harton Nook area between midnight and 4am last night.

Crew manager Jonathan Ramanayake urged people to take their bins in an soon as possible after they had been emptied.

"People should put their bins out out on the day of collection and take them back in as soon as possible," he said.

"It would be helpful if they could make a effort to do so.

"And anybody who wants any advice on fire safety can contact South Shields fire station on 444 1820."
