A YOUNGSTER with cerebral palsy whose hero is Captain America is aiming to get out of his wheelchair for adventures of his own – with a little help from you.

Determined Owen Taylor, nine, from Whiteleas, South Shields, loves the outdoor life and often goes on holidays to the Lake District with his mum Laura Thompson.

But he’s restricted in his ability to get out and about while in a wheelchair.

That’s why he and his family have launched a bid to raise £3,000 to buy an all-terrain buggy.

And proactive Owen, a pupil at Percy Hedley School in North Tyneside, aims to be at the forefront of the fundraising campaign himself.

The youngster is planning a two-mile bike ride along the Coast Road, in South Shields, to raise sponsorship money.

Mum Laura, 29, said: “Owen is a really happy boy who loves being outside, enjoys school, loves to play marbles, and Captain America is his favourite superhero.

“The all-terrain buggy is a three-wheel pushchair that you can use on grass, on the beach and in the snow.

“It doesn’t have the restrictions of a wheelchair and it will give Owen so much more freedom when we go outdoors on walks in the Lake District.”

Owen said: “I need specialist equipment to help me with all my daily needs. Riding a bike for two miles will be very difficult for me as I cannot walk.

“However, I am determined to do this and every penny will make a difference. I thank everyone for their help.”

Last year Owen’s cousin Tyler Thompson and family friends Claire Whittle-Richens and Martin Whitehead took part in various challenges to help raise cash to buy Owen a new bicycle.

And family and friends are also on board for the latest challenge, with his grandmother Dawn Taylor taking part in a 14-week weight loss challenge.

Now they’re hoping businesses and individuals will help support with fundraising efforts and also come forward with raffle prizes.
