United are looking to sign another winger in this summer transfer window.

Speaking after Tuesday night's 2-0 win over Southend United, manager Rafa Benitez said: "Still we have some things behind the scenes and we are close."

Knockaert signed a three-and-a-half year deal with Brighton after returning to English football at the turn of the year.

The former Leicester City player scored five goals in 19 Championship outings.

Brighton, managed by Chris Hughton, have turned down bids for Lewis Dunk and Dale Stephens from Crystal Palace and Burnley respectively this summer.

The club, which missed out on promotion by goal difference last season, is desperate to keep its squad together ahead of a renewed promotion challenge.
