Brexit activists hit South Shields campaigning for Britain to leave the EU

Henry Pearce and Charles McKenzie-Smith, who are part of the national campaign group Grassroots Out were in King Street, South Shields.

The activists were keen to spread information on how the country would fair better if it was no longer part of the European Union.

However, they both said that many of the borough’s residents appeared to already be in favour of voting ‘leave’ during the referendum on June 23.

Mr McKenzie-Smith said: “We’ve had a fantastic amount of support from people in South Tyneside, with the vast majority of folk saying they want to leave.

“Polls have shown that as many as seven in 10 people are in favour of leaving.

“The thing we need to do now is make sure that people actually turn up on voting day and actually put a cross on the ballot paper - that’s where it really counts.

“If this happens then we have a real chance of leaving the EU.”

The pair were keen to debunk myths surrounding Britain’s departure from the EU.

Mr Pearce said: “People have said that north east businesses like Nissan may suffer as a result, but the companies have came forward and said it won’t make any difference to them if they;re in or out.

“There’s a lot of scaremongering going on, but we have a lot of information here to give to people, so hopefully more folk will pay us a visit.”

The group will be back in King Street next Saturday.
