A family’s history of baking has prompted a couple to open up their own business.

Elaine Miller had always been interested in her great-grandmother’s past as the owner of a bakery shop in South Shields.

Despite this, she tried various other careers – including being a bus driver.

But, after baking a cake for a baby shower and enjoying the experience, Elaine, together with her partner Tracey, decided, this was where their hearts lay.

They began making cakes for family and friends and from there decided to make it a business.

Saving where they could, they eventually raised enough money to launch Miller’s Bespoke Bakery from a premise in Laygate, South Shields.

The bakery is the first business venture for the pair.

Tracey said: “Baking has always been a part of our families, with Elaine’s great-grandmother owning a bakery shop.

“I grew up in a family where people were always baking.

“It was just something we both felt passionate about and decided we should go for it.

“We started to save up and went looking for premises and were lucky enough to not only find the right place for us, but also a very supportive landlord.

“We spent four months re-designing the inside the shop, laying floors and re-wiring the place to cater for what we needed.

“It really is the best thing we have done and everything is going really well.

“We are getting more and more orders everyday, with most coming through word of mouth and recommendations.”

The couple, who opened the doors to their new shop in April, say they are keen to keep their celebration cakes affordable.

They also sell cakes from the shop on a daily basis.

Tracey said: “The way we design our cakes is that we like them to tell a story.

“From the cake itself to the stand it’s on, we just want to make each cake special.

“The way it has taken off it is fantastic and it is growing by the day.

“We just love what we do. We are delivering a service which make people happy, and there is no better feeling than that.”

The couple have also donated a number of cakes to charity.

The shop is open Mondays to Fridays, between 11am and 5pm, and on Saturdays, 11am until 3.30pm.

Orders can be placed either by calling into the shop or via the bakery’s facebook page www.facebook.com/Millersbespokebakery
