The chance to discover your potential as a digital developer and designer will be on offer in South Shields next week.

South Tyneside’s OpenZone @ The Word is giving people the opportunity to find out more and try their hand at coding.

From Wednesday, April 5, until Wednesday, April 12, people of all ages can take part in a host of free coding taster sessions.

OpenZone is one of a variety of facilities at The Word, National Centre for the Written Word, which features state-of-the-art IT suites and a media studio where people can develop their ICT and digital skills.

Throughout the week-long event, visitors to OpenZone can learn the basics of writing code, how to design their own website, by using popular web languages such as HTML 5, CSS3 and JavaScript, as well as how to use the programming language Python and control a Raspberry Pi.

Those with an interest in pursuing a career in gaming or in the wider technology industry can take advantage of dedicated sessions for each sector, providing people with an insight into the types of roles, vast range of skills and career opportunities available.

Youngsters will also be able to get to grips with coding by learning how code can control a Star Wars droid as well as characters in the hugely popular game Minecraft.

Those who fancy a challenge can learn how to programme a Lego EV3 robot enabling it to move and respond to its environment.
